DAoC: Communicating in the Game

There are different ways to communicate within the game (say, yell, whisper, private tell, reply, emote, animated emote, group, guild, chat group, advice, appeal, alliance, officer, and ignore). The following are brief descriptions and instructions for using the most common:

Say: The /s command will display your message to anyone near your character in the game. The format for this command is /SAY [message]. For example, typing "/s Where is the arrow merchant in town?" will display "[Your Character's Name] says 'Where is the arrow merchant in town?'" to anyone within "speaking" distance. You cannot use /s when you are dead.
TIP: Most higher level characters (20+) will set up a hot key on their Quick Bar using a command similiar to "/macro gk /s Exit Enter" so they may command a Gatekeeper at a keep with a single click to either let them in or out of the keep. Using the command shown, the button on the Quick Bar would be labeled "gk" for "gatekeeper."

Yell: The /Y command will display your message to a wider area. The format for this command is /Y[message]. For example, typing "/Y Middies near the drinkers!" will display "[Your Character's Name] yells 'Middies near the drinkers!'" to anyone within "shouting" distance. You can type /Y without a message to have your character yell for help. This command can be used when you are dead and is an excellent way to draw the attention of a potential rezzer.

Whisper: The /WHISPER command will display your message to the targetted person, whether it is a Player Character (PC) or Non-Player Character (NPC). It should be used when you don't want your conversation to be overheard by others who are nearby. You must target the person to whome you wish to whisper then type /WHISPER [message]. An example is typing "/WHISPER task" after targetting an NPC, which would display "[Your Character's Name] speaks to [Targeted NPC's Name]." Some players use whisper in this way to obtain kill tasks from NPCs.
TIP: If you are concentrating on kill tasks, you may want to create a hot key on your Quick Bar using the command "/macro tsk /whisper task" so you can target a NPC and get a new kill task with a single click.
Using the command shown, the button on the Quick Bar would be labeled "tsk" for "task."

Private Tell/Send: The /SEND command will display your message only to the person named in the command. This allows you to carry on a private conversation with another player, even if that player is in another group, zone, or has traveled to another realm. The format for this command is /SEND [Name] [Message]. For example, typing "/send Gregoir How is the pit treating you?" will display "[Your Character's Name] sends, 'How is the pit treating you?'" only to the character named Gregoir, and only if he is online. You can use /tell instead of /send, as they do the same thing.
TIP: Some players use the /anon command to make their characters appear to be offline when they travel to enemy realms or the battlegrounds. Even if a character appears to be offline to you, you can use the /send command to communicate with them if they are in fact online. This is an easy way to see if a friend is online and anonymous.

Reply: You may quickly respond to a private tell/send you receive using the [R] key (no slash). It will automatically enter the /send command and the name of the last person that messaged you, leaving you free to simply type your reply message.

Emote: The /EM command can be used to communicate non-verbally with any one near your character. It is a way of describing an action you want your character to "perform" (although emotes do not actually cause the character to perform the action, they only describe it). The format for this command is /EM [action]. For example, typing "/EM wonders when Glasny will decide to show up" would display "<[Your Character's Name] wonders when Glasny will decide to show up.>" to anyone close enough to observe the action (that is, if there was an actual action your character acted out).
TIP: Just for fun, some players set up a hot key on their Quick Bar with common emotes they use. An example is creating a hot key using the command "/macro brd /em drums her fingers," which is a playful way of saying you are bored. Using the command shown, the button on the Quick Bar would be labeled "brd" for "bored."

Animated Emotes: There is a small list of emotes that are set up as commands themselves and may include animation (that is, they may make your character act out the command). Some of these animated emotes are:

/beckon
/blush
/bow
/cheer
/clap
/cry
/curtsey
/flex
/kiss
/dance
/laugh
/point
/salute
/bang
/victory
/wave

Group: The /g command allows you to talk to others with whom you are grouped. No one outside the group will see what you"say" when you use group chat in this way. The format for the command is /g [message]. For example, typing "/g Incoming! Prepare for battle!" will display "[Your Character's Name] says, 'Incoming! Prepare for battle!'" to everyone in your group, even if they are in another zone or have traveled to an enemy realm. By default, group communication can only be viewed using the Group tab in the Text Window.
TIP: Most players set up a hot key on their Quick Bar using something like "/macro inc /g Pulling - get ready!" so they can warn their group of incoming monsters with a single click. Using the command shown, the button on the Quick Bar would be labeled "inc" for "incoming MOB/monster."

Guild: The /gu command allows you to talk to others in your guild. No one outside the guild will see what you "say" when you use guild chat. The format for this command is /gu [message]. For example, typing "/gu How do I find the melancholic faeries?" will display "[Your Character's Name] says, 'How do I find the melancholic faeries?'" to everyone in your guild who is currently online, even if they are in another zone or have traveled to an enemy realm. By default, guild communication can only be viewed using the Guild tab in the Text Window.

Chat Group: There are several commands for creating and using a chat group with your friends, but the /c command allows you to talk to others in your established chat group. A chat group allows you to chat with multiple friends at the same time, even if you are not in the same group, zone, and/or realm (i.e., they have traveled to an enemy realm). The format for the command is /c [message]. For example, typing "/c Where are you guys?" will display "[Your Character's Name] says, 'Where are you guys?'" to everyone in the chat group. No one outside the chat group will be able to "hear" what you "say" when you use this command. By default, chat group communication can only be viewed using the Chat tab in the Text Window.

Other commands used for chat groups are:
  • /cg invite [name] Invite [name] into your chat group. You must be the chat group leader to use this command.
/cg remove [name] Remove [name] from your chat group. You must be the chat group leader to use this command.
/cg disband Disbands the chat group. You must be the chat group leader to use this command.
/cg who Lists everyone in the chat group, with the chat group leader listed first in the list.
/cg leave Removes you from the chat group.

TIP: Most keep and battleground raids run much smoother when everyone involved is in a chat group. This allows coordination of the movements of multiple groups and ensures everyone understands the raid plan and goals.

Broadcast: The /br command allows you to address everyone currently in a zone or local area. It is restricted to specific areas, such as Howth, Ardee, etc. You may use broadcast when you see the tagline in your message box "You have entered [place name]." The format for this command is /br [message]. For example, typing "/br Taking orders for osnardatha armor. Send tells." while in Ardagh will display "[Your Character's Name] broadcasts, 'Taking orders for osnardatha armor. Send tells.' to everyone currently inside the Ardagh area.
TIP: Use this command while being considerate of other players. Inother words, please do not spam other players with messages that would be better sent using another method.

Advice: Many players have flagged themselves as available to answer basic questions of other players. You can use the /advice command to both access a list of these advisors that are currently available and to communicate with one of them. The format for this command is /advice to see a list of available advisors and /advice [player] [question] to send a question to the advisor you chose. For example, typing "/advice garnet How should I spec my new druid?" would display "[Your Character's Name] asks, 'How should I spc my new druid?' to only the player character named Garnet. Please remember that the advisors are volunteers; please be patient and mindful of their time.

Appeal: Sometimes you may run into an issue that only Mythic's Customer Service can assist you with, such as another player using abusive language or otherwise harassing you. You should use the /appeal command to send your appeal to customer service. The format for this command is /appeal [description of problem]. An example is typing "/appeal Meannie continuously harassed me in the bog."A pop up menu will appear; be sure to choose the proper category for your request.
TIP: You should have chat logging enabled (done by hitting the [L] key, with no slash) so that Customer Service can review the logs to help with any appeals.

Alliance: The ability to read Alliance chat is available to most guild members of guilds within the alliance. Alliance speak, however, is a restricted ability. The /as command is only available to guild members within an alliance who have achieved sufficient rank as determined by the the guild. The format for this command is /as [message]. For example, typing "/as 2 groups of Middies spotted at Bolg" would display "[Your Character's Name] says, '2 groups of Middies spotted at Bolg'" to all members of guilds in the alliance.
TIP: Alliance Speak is a privilege and should be treated as such. Only alliance-related messages should be relayed using this method.

Officer: Officers within a guild are able to talk using the Officer chat. Messages sent using this method are only displayed to online guild officers. The /o command is only available to guild members who have achieved sufficient rank as determined by the guild. The format for this command is /o [message]. For example, typing "/o We need to vote on promotions soon" would display "[Your Character's Name] says, 'We need to vote on promotions soon' only to officers of your guild.

Ignore: Some pesky players will practically beg for you to ignore them through harassing behavior or statements. The /ignore command allows you to easily wipe your hands of these pests because it blocks any messages they attempt to send to you. The format for this command is /ignore [player]. For example, typing "/ignore Meannie" will prevent any messages Meannie attempts to send directly to you from being displayed on your screen.
TIP: Sometimes using the /ignore command is not enough because players can still follow you, /yell at you, and use /s to just say things to anyone nearby. In these extreme cases, it is recommended that you use the /appeal command mentioned above then tell the "bad" player that you have reported his behavior to customer service and to leave you alone. If the harassment continues, log off the game for a while.
